Intro To P Line Fluorocarbon

P Line Fluorocarbon LogoGo through a few different brands of fluorocarbon and you’ll find they aren’t all the same. Though true fluorocarbon comes from Japanese crystals, they don’t all share the exact characteristics. P Line Fluorocarbon has a soft quality that other fluoros tend to lack. If you’ve ever struggled with tying a connection of stiff fluoro to mono or braided fishing line, you are well aware.

The soft property of P Line Fluoro makes it behave closer to monofilament when it comes to knot tying. Although soft, this leader material has all the strength and abrasion resistance an angler needs to ensure his or her catch. Experience stronger knots with a softer leader that’s invisible to fish vision.

Key Features Of P Line Fluorocarbon

100% Japanese Fluorocarbon Crystals

If you’re looking for fluorocarbon line that truly is invisible to fish, the key is in the crystals. P Line uses nothing but pure Japanese fluorocarbon crystals in the construction of their Ultimate Fluorocarbon. The importance lies in the way the crystals refract light when underwater, a translucent quality no other line possesses.

Soft Yet Extremely Durable

Though it’s nowhere near limp, P Line Fluoro is much closer in flexibility to a standard monofilament line than other fluorocarbons. It’s softness, however, doesn’t mean it lacks strength or durability. Ultimate Fluorocarbon will pull in the heavy models and last for trips to come.

High Knot & Breaking Strength

P Line Fluoro CharacteristicsThe soft quality of P Line Fluoro makes knot tying much easier and it also leads to stronger connections. It has less of a tendency to kink and will cinch down better than stiffer fluorocarbons. Like most P Line products, their Ultimate Fluorocarbon has more breaking strength than it states. Put the drag down without fear of breaking off as long as you trust your knot tying abilities.

Low Stretch & Water Absorption

Although it’s soft, P Line Fluoro has less of a stretch rate than most fluorocarbon lines. This trait gives it a high sensitivity, though it depends on your backing as well. Match it with braid for the most feel or with mono if you prefer some stretch. Having a very low water absorption rate is another property important to knot strength and one most fluorocarbon lines share.

Good Abrasion Resistance

Abrasion resistance isn’t a trait you might expect out of a soft fishing line, but don’t let that fool you. P Line Fluorocarbon is soft for its type of line but still offers plenty of abrasion resistance. Rub this leader against a rock or a loose string of kelp and the nicks won’t make it snap. You should always replace your line when scuffs appear but it’s the ability to withstand breakage during the battle that makes P Line so valuable.

Pros & Cons

Pros Of P Line Fluoro

P Line offers a high-quality line for the asking price in its Ultimate Fluorocarbon. The line is both manageable and easy to work with while exhibiting all the positive traits anglers are looking for. Great knot and breaking strength, plenty of resistance to abrasion, plus extreme sensitivity are all advantages when using P Line Fluoro.

Cons

For offshore anglers, it’s disappointing that P Line doesn’t make Ultimate Fluoro any higher than 30 lb test. As any old time captain will tell you, adding any connection to your mainline is a risky proposition. Every knot you tie is a point where the line becomes weaker and leaders are no exception. Still, if the fish are line shy it may be the only choice you have. You can go with superior fluorocarbon lines for a bit more moolah or cheaper ones that aren’t quite as effective.

Best Application / Fishing Style

Some anglers might argue that fluorocarbon doesn’t make enough of a difference to be worth the extra knot in your line. Others won’t fish at all without first tying on a fluoro leader. My own experience was one of hesitation in the beginning. I wasn’t sold on fluorocarbon as an effective tool for catching more fish.

In time, I began to notice on overnight trips that anglers would pick off tuna during a tough bite. More often than they were using a fluoro leader. After a couple of trips seeing more than one large school of tuna refuse to bite anything without a fluoro leader, I lost any remaining doubts. My setups don’t start with fluoro leader but I carry it at all times. If the captain suggests it or the fish won’t bite. I tie it on without hesitation.
