Calstar GFGR 700H ReviewThe Calstar family of rods originates out of Gardena, Ca. The owners grew up with other companies before creating Calstar. They have over 50 years experience making rods.

Calstar rods come with a lifetime manufacturers warranty. Any rods with defects will be replaced free of charge.

Calstar rods also come with a damage warranty. If the rods are user damaged, they will be replaced at a nominal price up to the discretion of Calstar. I once had mine replaced for $50.00

The cons of owning a Calstar Rod

Plenty of rods out there are less expensive

Calstar isn’t the most expensive rod maker, but definitely not the cheapest. The quality and warranty of Calstar rods provide a sound argument here.

Equal competitors offer quality product

Calstar by no means stands alone in the class of elite rod crafters. There are plenty of other companies to look at. I encourage every fisherman to do this, and I will be covering other brand reviews as well.

Some anglers prefer hand crafted rods

Hand crafted rods offer the angler the value of knowing the crafter of their rod. They can direct the builder to create the rod to the exact specs they desire, and they can trust that the craftsmanship is sound.

Thank you for a wonderful website in breaking down the new so highly technical saltwater fishing equipment and sport fishing game! I am thinking of a Shimano Torium 3, to take the place of what I used to Jig with in the old days of the penn 30 or 40 Senator? I am in the Northeast and fish the Eastern end of the Long Island sound out to the Block Island sound. Target species are Stripped Bass and Cod as the mid shore game in the late spring and summer months. Picking my days I can run off shore out to 50 miles for some tuna trolling. At 63 years young I am old school, in my experience the conventional*drag is quicker on the drop. Regarding to the tuna fishing, I am set up with 50 and 80 series international’s but I like to put a TLD 25 or a 40 Sen. on a flat line right behind the transom with very light hex heads, for some added excitement! I appreciate your thoughts on the Torium 3 for this use? Also your recommendations on the replacement calstar or shimano jig/casting rod for this reel. I thank you again for all of your help in breaking down all of this highly technical stress!

I think the Torium 3 could be effective and it does have a nice cost for the value.

I’d also recommend looking at Penn Fathoms (would go well with the Internationals). Don’t miss Accurate Reels out of California either. They’re well worth an inspection at minimum.

      As for the rods….
I think CalStar rods are still available. Look at Seeker and also Phenix. Lamiglas has some great offshore rods as well.
